How to Care for Oak Flooring

Oak flooring not only looks fabulous, it is incredibly easy to maintain.

Spills on your oak floor

If liquid is spilt on the floor it is important to remove as much as you can immediately.

The area can then be cleaned with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth.

Scratches and other damage

Light scratches can be easily removed by hand sanding (with the direction of the grain) the area using a fine grit (120-200) paper.

Remove all dust then apply a small amount of finish using a lint free cloth.

More significant damage may require the services of a flooring professional, if in any doubt please call us here at Alpha Oak and we will be only too happy to advise.

The guidelines below will keep your floor looking great for a lifetime.

General Care

  1. Beautiful oak floors Use mats in entrances to prevent wet and dirt being tracked over the floor.
  2. Use felt pads on table and chair legs to prevent scratching.
  3. Use caster cups under sofas and other heavy items such as pianos
  4. Never drag heavy items across flooring.
  5. Avoid wearing stiletto heels indoors as they will create small indentations in the floor surface.
  6. Strong sunlight may affect the colour of your floor so closing blinds or curtains at peak times will reduce this risk.

Daily Care

Regular vacuuming (with hard floor attachment) and sweeping with a soft bristle broom will remove any surface debris, especially grit which can act as an abrasive and cause scratching of the surface.

A damp mop can be used periodically to remove dust and freshen up the floor surface. See below;

Weekly Care

Important ‘damp mopping’ is very different to the usual method of mopping tiles.

After dipping in hand hot water, the mop must be wrung out completely until it is almost dry.

Mop over the floor to loosen dirt particles, and then frequently rinsing and fully wringing the mop out go over the floor again to remove them. The floor surface should be almost dry immediately after passing mop over it.

Do not over-wet the floor.

Steam cleaners must not be used on oak flooring.

Commercial floor cleaning products can be added to the water following the on pack directions, but please ensure these are ‘acid free’ and suitable for hardwood floors. If in doubt do not use.
The floor can then be buffed using a dry towel to give additional shine if required.
